Social Media & Politics
I am a political communication researcher, with particular focus on everyday political participation and media use. In my research I ask questions about how people navigate complex political and media landscapes in times of uncertainty and crisis. With my research, I hope not only to develop theories about digital society, but also provide tools for coping with the challenges and inequalities of digital society.
Originally from Dnipro, Ukraine, I hold a PhD from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Currently, I teach various courses on social media and politics at the University of Groningen (NL). My Ukrainian-Israeli background deeply influences my sholarly interests and agenda.
My recent projects focus on messaging apps use in Germany, the Netherlands, and Israel, and on media literacy education of the elderly in Ukraine, and Ukrainian refugees' media literacy in the Netherlads.
In this project, I study how people become engaged in civic life, from everyday interactions about their struggles and grievances to politically active participation. The project seeks to understand local civic participation through digital media, and advance the conceptualization of messaging apps as civic infrastructure. Case studies are based on fieldwork in Germany, the Netherlands, Israel, and Ukraine.
This project aims to understand digital media literacy and the use of digital technology as an effort of civic resilience in times of war and crisis. The first part of the project focuses on media literacy of older adults in Ukraine, while the second part investigates media literacy practices of Ukrainian refugees in the Netherlands.
